    1. I really liked this enthralling, huge and fearless novel - a beautiful, sensitively-told story, and a positive onion of a book. The outer, political layer, fascinating in itself, deals with the situation in Germany leading up to the Second World War from the German point of view. How complicated it was - and how well Lucy Beckett has grasped and explained it. She shows what a mess the whole business was in terms of constantly shifting boundaries and the disgraceful, arbitrary treatment of popula [...]

    2. A Postcard from the Volcano is a timeless book. I gave it five stars for several reasons. First of all, it is well written and moves fast. I couldn't put it down even the it is intense at times. Also, the character development is excellent. Lucy Beckett uses philosophical discussions to make the characters seem so real. If you like Michael D. O'Brien, you will like Lucy Beckett. Although the story is set in first half of the twentieth century, the characters struggle with issues that stil [...]

    3. I wasn't expecting much from this book, having never heard of the author outside a catalogue I get from a Catholic publishing house. But I enjoyed it. I loved the characters, and the story line, and the sweetness and the sorrow and the tragedy of young hopes and hearts and love during the time of the great darkness that was the Second World War. Having to choose from the boxes above (I don't know how they are featured in any published review) I would like to have said the mood was all at once [...]

    4. A friend insisted I read this book because we are alarmed by the numerous parallels between pre-Nazi Germany and today's United States. He insisted that "Postcard" would illustrate even more clearly the similarities. The book gets off to a very slow start as the author describes through Max's eyes his childhood and adolescent years of the early 1900's. It seems like we will never get to the 1930's. Without realizing it, we are suddenly walking through the 1920's and seeing the conditions that [...]

    5. I thought this book was wonderful. It is a recreation of the life of a man in Germany between the two World Wars, moving backwards from his death to explain how he got to where he is at the moment of his death, and tracing several lives involved with his. A great deal of it is made up of long, somewhat Dostoyevskian conversations on philosophy, religion and politics. While this may not sound very stimulating, I couldn't put the book down. The characters are given enough depth so they are inte [...]

    6. Beautifully written, insightful novel that captures the atmosphere and personal experience of life during the period between the world wars in Germany. It is often challenging, always engrossing. There is a true depth of understanding in this author's work and the writing rises to the level of some of the finest literature produced concerning the national character of the German people. The individual characters are well defined, real, and involving. It is a book that makes the reader think [...]
