    2. This book is very well written, honest and goes into the details of some of the inner motivation, ambition and contradictions of this lesser known alpinist (from the general public) who chose a different path, who had a vision for a new type of alpinism.

    3. Porter has detailed the short career of Alex MacIntyre in the course of a rich narrative presenting truly transitional years in climbing the greater ranges. The style leaps about somewhat, which bothered me at first; on reflection I think it suits the needs of writing history, personal narrative, biographical accounting, and more. I was delighted by the many tidbits of telling quotations, aphorisms even, of climbers familiar and not. That the story pretty much begins with the latter years of [...]

    4. Having read Shishapangma Expedition by Alex MacIntyre and Doug Scott, I had hoped this book about MacIntyre and shared experiences with the author would be as good. Perhaps it is not fair to compare the two books, but I was disappointed at times. There were some good lines in there, and the book did win the Banff Festival Book Award, but I found myself skimming and fast forwarding way too much. Lots of filler in this book, although the author would disagree, having painstaking archived and retr [...]

    5. I would have liked to hear more about his technique he was so well known for. And his accident was not described in this book. I like to learn more of what led up to the errors made or like they say it just wasn't a good day. Or Is it just luck? Natural talent? Intuition definitely.
